d01706ce1e Improved and portable ast_log recursion avoidance
This introduces a new logger routine ast_log_safe. This routine should be
used for all error messages in code that can be run as a result of ast_log.
ast_log_safe does nothing if run recursively. All error logging in
astobj2.c, strings.c and utils.h have been switched to ast_log_safe.

This required adding support for raw threadstorage. This provides direct
access to the void* pointer in threadstorage. In ast_log_safe, NULL is used
to signify that this thread is not already running ast_log_safe, (void*)1 when
it is already running. This was done since it's critical that ast_log_safe
do nothing that could log during recursion checking.

fb5690ce4b Logger/CLI/etc.: Fix some aesthetic issues; reduce chatty verbose messages
This patch addresses some aesthetic issues in Asterisk. These are all just
minor tweaks to improve the look of the CLI when used in a variety of
settings. Specifically:
 * A number of chatty verbose messages were removed or demoted to DEBUG
messages. Verbose messages with a verbosity level of 5 or higher were -
if kept as verbose messages - demoted to level 4. Several messages
that were emitted at verbose level 3 were demoted to 4, as announcement
of dialplan applications being executed occur at level 3 (and so the
effects of those applications should generally be less).
 * Some verbose messages that only appear when their respective 'debug'
options are enabled were bumped up to always be displayed.
 * Prefix/timestamping of verbose messages were moved to the verboser
handlers. This was done to prevent duplication of prefixes when the
timestamp option (-T) is used with the CLI.
 * Verbose magic is removed from messages before being emitted to
non-verboser handlers. This prevents the magic in multi-line verbose
messages (such as SIP debug traces or the output of DumpChan) from
   being written to files.
 * _Slightly_ better support for the "light background" option (-W) was
added. This includes using ast_term_quit in the output of XML
documentation help, as well as changing the "Asterisk Ready" prompt to
bright green on the default background (which stands a better chance of
being displayed properly than bright white).

828f339a9c verbosity: Fix performance of console verbose messages.
The per console verbose level feature as previously implemented caused a
large performance penalty. The fix required some minor incompatibilities
if the new rasterisk is used to connect to an earlier version. If the new
rasterisk connects to an older Asterisk version then the root console
verbose level is always affected by the "core set verbose" command of the
remote console even though it may appear to only affect the current
console. If an older version of rasterisk connects to the new version
then the "core set verbose" command will have no effect.

* Fixed the verbose performance by not generating a verbose message if
nothing is going to use it and then filtered any generated verbose
messages before actually sending them to the remote consoles.

* Split the "core set debug" and "core set verbose" CLI commands to remove
the per module verbose support that cannot work with the per console
verbose level.

* Added a silent option to the "core set verbose" command.

* Fixed "core set debug off" tab completion.

* Made "core show settings" list the current console verbosity in addition
to the root console verbosity.

* Changed the default verbose level of the 'verbose' setting in the
logger.conf [logfiles] section. The default is now to once again follow
the current root console level. As a result, using the AMI Command action
with "core set verbose" could again set the root console verbose level and
affect the verbose level logged.

c43f380d03 Add backtrace generation to MALLOC_DEBUG memory corruption reports
This patch allows astmm to access the backtrace generation code in Asterisk.
When memory is allocated, a backtrace is created and stored with the memory
region that tracks the allocation. If a memory corruption is detected, the
backtrace is printed to the astmm log. The backtrace will make use of the
BETTER_BACKTRACES build option if available.

As a result, this patch moves the backtrace generation code into its own file
and uses the non-wrapped versions of the C library memory allocation routines.
This allows the memory allocation code to safely use the backtrace generation
routines without infinitely recursing.

71bce17720 Stopped spamming of debug messages during attended transfer.
While autoservice is running and servicing a channel the callid is being stored
and removed in the thread's local storage for each iteration of the thread loop.
If debug was set to a sufficient level the log file would be spammed with callid
thread local storage debug messages.

Added a new function that checks to see if the callid to be stored is different
than what is already contained (if anything). If it is different then
store/replace and log, otherwise just leave as is. Also made it so all logging
of debug messages pertaining to the callid thread storage outputs only when
TEST_FRAMEWORK is defined.

cd37bec058 logger: Adds additional support for call id logging and chan_sip specific stuff
This patch improves the handling of call id logging significantly with regard
to transfers and adding APIs to better handle specific aspects of logging.
Also, changes have been made to chan_sip in order to better handle the creation
of callids and to enable the monitor thread to bind itself to a particular
call id when a dialog is determined to be related to a callid. It then unbinds
itself before returning to normal monitoring.

00b270833f Fix bogus reads/writes of console log levels in asterisk.c
This patch updates the NUMLOGLEVELS define in logger.h to 32, to match the fact
that logger.c implements 32 log levels (because of the custom log level stuff).
asterisk.c uses this define to size an array of levels per remote console.

This array is modified in ast_console_toggle_loglevel(), which is called by the
"logger set level" CLI command. While the documentation for the CLI command
doesn't make it terribly obvious, you can use this CLI command to toggle a
custom log level on a remote console, as well. However, doing so led to an
invalid array index in asterisk.c.

This array is read from any time a log message is written to a console. So,
all custom log level messages resulted in a bogus read if a remote console
was connected.

a78b0af5ea Re-commit the verbose branch.
This change permits each verbose destination (consoles, logger) to have its
own concept of what the verbosity level is. The big feature here is that
the logger will now be able to capture a particular verbosity level without
condemning each console to need to suffer that level of verbosity.
Additionally, a stray 'core set verbose' will no longer change what will go
to the log.

9057aa20b6 Backed out core changes from r346391
During testing, it was discovered that there were a number of side effects
introduced by r346391 and subsequent check-ins related to it (r346429,
r346617, and r346655). This included the /main/stdtime/ test 'hanging',
as well as the remote console option failing to receive the appropriate output
after a period of time.

I only backed out the changes to main/ and utils/, as this was adequate
to reverse the behavior experienced.

ae6008ef3a Change per-file debug and verbose levels to be per-module, the way
users expect them to work.

'core set debug' and 'core set verbose' can optionally change the
level for a specific filename; however, this is actually for a
specific source file name, not the module that source file is included
in. With examples like chan_sip, chan_iax2, chan_misdn and others
consisting of multiple source files, this will not lead to the
behavior that users expect. If they want to set the debug level for
chan_sip, they want it set for all of chan_sip, and not to have to
also set it for reqresp_parser and other files that comprise the
chan_sip module.

This patch changes this functionality to be module-name based instead
of file-name based.

To make this work, some Makefile modifications were required to ensure
that the AST_MODULE definition is present in each object file produced
for each module as well.

bf0bb7b385 Add Doxygen documentation for API changes from 1.6.0 to 1.6.1
Copied from my review board description:
This is a continuation of the API changes documentation started for describing
changes between releases. Most of the API changes were pretty simple needing
only to be brought to attention via the new "Asterisk API Changes" list.
However, if you see anything that needs further explanation feel free to
supplement what is there. The current method of documenting is to add (in the
header file): \version <ver number> <description of changes> and then to add
the function to the change list in doxyref.h on the AstAPIChanges page. I also
made sure all the functions that were newly added were tagged with \since
1.6.1. I think this is a good habit to start both for the historical aspect as

887e28d7aa incorporates r159808 from branches/1.4:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
r159808 | kpfleming | 2008-11-29 10:58:29 -0600 (Sat, 29 Nov 2008) | 7 lines

update dev-mode compiler flags to match the ones used by default on Ubuntu Intrepid, so all developers will see the same warnings and errors

since this branch already had some printf format attributes, enable checking for them and tag functions that didn't have them

format attributes in a consistent way

------------------------------------------------------------------------

in addition:

move some format attributes from main/utils.c to the header files they belong in, and fix up references to the relevant functions based on new compiler warnings

afb571ba8f Starting with a change to ensure that ast_verbose() preserves ABI compatibility
in 1.6.1 (as compared to 1.6.0 and versions of 1.4), this change also
deprecates the use of Asterisk with FreeBSD 4, given the central use of va_copy
in core functions. va_copy() is C99, anyway, and we already require C99 for
other purposes, so this isn't really a big change anyway. This change also
simplifies some of the core ast_str_* functions.

3cf77c4c7f Fix a bunch of places where \arg was used instead of \param. Using \arg
to document arguments seems logical, and does work, but is not the best
thing to use.

\arg in doxygen is simply for creating non-nested unordered lists. \param is
the correct tag to use to document function parameters, and will come out
better in the generated documentation.

975a848b67 A new feature thanks to the fine folks at Switchvox!
If a deadlock is detected, then the typical lock information will be
printed along with a backtrace of the stack for the offending threads.
Use of this requires compiling with DETECT_DEADLOCKS and having glibc
installed.

Furthermore, issuing the "core show locks" CLI command will print the
normal lock information as well as a backtraces for each lock. This
requires that DEBUG_THREADS is enabled and that glibc is installed.

All the backtrace features may be disabled by running the configure
script with --without-execinfo as an argument

1b8f183ca3 This change makes it so that logs will report the correct source of verbose messages.
Until this change, all verbose messages in Asterisk's log files reported logger.c
as the source of the message.

797adf6bf8 Round 2 of IMAP_STORAGE app_voicemail.c fixes:
This fixes a bug that was thought to be fixed already.

app_voicemail, if using IMAP_STORAGE, has a problem because
the IMAP header files include syslog.h, which define LOG_WARNING
and LOG_DEBUG to be different than what Asterisk uses for those
same macros. This was "fixed" in the past by including all the
IMAP header files prior to including asterisk.h. This fix worked...
unless you were to try to compile with MALLOC_DEBUG. MALLOC_DEBUG
prepends the inclusion of astmm.h to every file, which means that no
matter what order the includes are in in app_voicemail, the unexpected
values for LOG_WARNING and LOG_DEBUG will be in place.

The action taken for this fix was to define AST_LOG_* macros in addition
to the LOG_* macros already defined. These new macros are used in app_voicemail.c,
logger.h, and astobj.h right now, and their use will be encouraged in the future.

In consideration of those who have written third-party modules which use
the LOG_* macros, these will NOT be removed from the source, however future use
of these macros is discouraged.

4f75e15665 After reading Russell's e-mail to the dev list stating that checking option_verbose is not
equivalent to the check done by ast_verb, I wrote a macro, VERBOSITY_LEVEL, which does this
check. I did a quick look in the source and used this macro in some places where option_verbose
was used.

I also converted some verbose messages in logger.c to use ast_verb instead of ast_verbose.

fdb7f7ba3d Start untangling header inclusion in a way that does not affect
build times - tested, there is no measureable difference before and
after this commit.

In this change:

use asterisk/compat.h to include a small set of system headers:
inttypes.h, unistd.h, stddef.h, stddint.h, sys/types.h, stdarg.h,
stdlib.h, alloca.h, stdio.h

Where available, the inclusion is conditional on HAVE_FOO_H as determined
by autoconf.

Normally, source files should not include any of the above system headers,
and instead use either "asterisk.h" or "asterisk/compat.h" which does it
better.

For the time being I have left alone second-level directories
(main/db1-ast, etc.).

Fix an issue with console verbosity when running asterisk -rx to execute a command
and retrieve its output. The issue was that there was no way for the main Asterisk
process to know that the remote console was connecting in the -rx mode. The way that
James has fixed this is to have all remote consoles muted by default. Then, regular
remote consoles automatically execute a CLI command to unmute themselves when they
first start up.

Reported by: bbryant
Patches:
20070720__core_debug_by_file.patch uploaded by bbryant (license 36)
	  (with some modifications by me)
Tested by: russell, bbryant

This set of changes introduces the ability to set the core debug or verbose
levels on a per-file basis. Interestingly enough, in 1.4, you have the ability
to set core debug for a single file, but that functionality was accidentally
lost in the conversion of the CLI commands to the new format.

This patch improves upon what was in 1.4 by letting you set it for more than 1
file, and by also supporting verbose.

*** Janitor Project ***

This patch also introduces a new macro, ast_verb(), which is similar
to ast_debug(). Setting the per file verbose value only works for messages that
use this macro. Converting existing uses of ast_verbose() can be done like:

if (option_debug > 2)
   ast_verbose(VERBOSE_PREFIX_3 "Something useful\n");

...

ast_verb(3, "Something useful\n");
